Music

Welcome to music at BPC!
With many different opportunities offered to all who have a desire to participate, we use music to enhance worship and create an atmosphere of prayer, meditation, joy, and praise. Our music program also provides musical performances and music education to members of our congregation and community.

To learn more about the music opportunities at our church, please see the details below. If you would like to become involved in our music program, or have questions or comments, please email me at pianoetc@live.com. Thank you for visiting our website! I hope to have the opportunity to meet you in person soon.

Organ Music
An important part of our music program is organ music. We have a very capable organ that allows for a wide range of music to be played. Most of our worship services begin with fifteen minutes of meditative organ pieces to create a time for reflection and personal thought. Our congregational hymns are accompanied by our organ, which provides wonderful support to our choirs and congregation. At the close of the service, a classical organ piece is played for a postlude. These pieces usually showcase the grand, triumphant registrations available on our organ, and provide a wonderful sendoff after being renewed through worship.

Chancel Choir
We welcome you to become a member of the Barrington Presbyterian Church Chancel Choir! Membership in our choir is open to all adults (high school age and older) who have a love for singing and for leading music in worship.

Who we are   We are a group of individuals who have a desire to praise the Lord through sacred music. We come from a wide variety of backgrounds and use our diverse range of talents to enhance our musical and worship experiences.

What’s involved   We rehearse on Thursday evenings from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., and on Sunday mornings from 9:00 to 9:30 a.m. We sing during the Sunday 10:00 a.m. service of worship on a weekly basis from September through June. Daily practice at home is not required, but rehearsal CDs and full song recordings are provided, and ten minutes of daily warm-up exercises can be helpful. Occasional special events are also involved, with flexible scheduling. (At left, our choir performs at Christmas at The Breakers.)

What we sing   We sing a wide range of sacred music, from classical masterpieces to gospel treasures. The music we sing is organized in such a manner that a mixed array of music is presented in worship from week to week.

Solo/Small Ensemble Music
Quite often our worship services include a solo or small group piece. This can be instrumental and/or vocal, and made up of as many or as few ensemble members as the particular piece requires. It is not necessary to be a member of our choir to participate in this program, and no long-term commitment will be made to the music program unless you request it. Pieces are either selected by a soloist or group and suggested to the music director for consideration, or the music director selects a piece and date and announces to all ensembles and those on the special music list that volunteers will be needed.

If you are interested in participating in solo/small ensemble music, please send an email to pianoetc@live.com and you will be added to the special music email list. Opportunities to present solo/small ensemble music in worship need to be scheduled on a date that fits both the needs of the participants and of the worship schedule, so scheduling can be flexible but will require discussion. All music presented in worship must be either classical or sacred, in order to complement the flow of the service.

Youth Choir
Our Youth Choir meets each Sunday at 11:20 a.m. for a brief rehearsal. This ensemble exists to provide young people with a basic knowledge of musical skills, with practice in effective ensemble technique, and with experience in leading worship through musical offerings. A wide range of sacred music styles are explored, and rehearsals are conducted in a manner that gives all interested young people a chance to participate and benefit from the experience. This ensemble is open to all children from kindergarten through middle school. No previous experience is required in order to participate, and opportunities are given for every member to grow musically and spiritually. Our youth choir will resume a regular rehearsal schedule in fall 2012.
